Hi Everyone,
I have been sitting here cackling away as I went through all the entries to the Aussie Slang competition I ran to celebrate Australia Day. Lots of very creative entries and a few of you were very good with your answers!!
So I bet some of you are wondering what on earth the real meanings are? Well here we go!
- You little Ripper – Exclamation of delight or as a reaction to good news
- Well I’ll be buggered! – an expression of surprise or amazement!
- Crikey – Golly Gosh! We all know who made this word famous. Luv ya Steve!
- Fair dinkum – genuine, truth, real (nope not a doughnut!!) – I usually hear this when someone is referring to someone else – “He’s Fair dinkum” – in other words “He’s an honest bloke.”
- On a good wicket – to be involved in a successful activity. Actually I think many Aussies use this when they see someone doing well that appears to not be doing much. heehe
- Make a proper galah of yourself - Make a fool of yourself
- She’ll be apples – The situation will be OK. Often said if things aren’t going well for a friend and you want to cheer them up.
- Ridgie Didge - True or Genuine. Really not something many of us would use today but it does sound funny!!
- Buggerlugs – an affectionate name for someone but often with a little bit of a condescending tone. Often the kiddies get called buggerlugs as they can be rascals!
- Give it a burl - Give it a try
- Bob’s yer uncle - There you go… That was easy wasn’t it?
- Go like the clappers – Going fast. Often used when someone is ‘doing’ something fast!
- Ningnong – A silly person – Often said when someone says or does something stupid.
- Good Onya! – Good for you! Genuinely happy that someone has done well or got something great!
- Rough end of the stick – got the bad side of the deal
I tried to give you a bit of an idea in what situations the words might be used too so I hope it helped!
I received 30 entries with a couple coming in via email and FB! Thanks to everyone for playing along!
I headed on over to random.org to draw the big winner and…
The winner is: Number 4! Bettina
Congratulations Bettina

On to some honourable mentions.
Now this was hard because I chuckled the whole way through.
Some of the meanings you came up with for particular words nearly had me falling off my chair crying.
Donna was so creative and wrote a story incorporating the slang terms!
Some hilarious takes on different slang but my favourite was ‘We’ll I’ll be buggered!”
I thought it was hilarious that she picked out names to give to crafting activities or machines! haha
Ladies I have a little Aussie collection of digi stamps to send your way including some Aussie slang sentiments that you will now know how to use!
Please contact me and I’ll package em up and send them your way.

The rainbow coloring is absolutely gorgeous!
I really wanted to enter the Aussie slang comp and made a start on it, and you’ll never guess what came on the radio while I was doing it….only Rolf Harris singing Sun A-rise!!! How’s that for an omen? lol. Didnt get it done in time unfortunately, but it was fun trying.
Thanks so much Zoe for randomly selecting my name for Spreading the Love over the Valentine fairy…I am really pleased to be able to pick an image. I’ve just used your Petals & Palings image in my Make It Colourful entry this week and i loved the difference it made to my card to have a little background for my Tilda….cant wait to pick one out! Yay! CoB
Meant to say, Zoe….thanks for spreading the love!
