Colouring Water Drops is a challenge!!

Zoe May 2, 2011 33

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend. I managed to take a little bit of time out for myself and have a play.

As you may know, myself and my gorgeous team challenge you each week to colour in different ways over at Make it Colourful. However, what you may not know is that we occasionally have behind the scene challenges with each other. hehee

Recently rain drops became a topic of discussion and somehow it was turned into a challenge between two of us. hahaa  You see the challenge became so ridiculous that absolutely no other medium OTHER than copic markers were allowed to be used. We couldn’t use opaque white pens for the highlights or anything!!

So I haven’t seen Barbara’s attempt yet and I am rather nervous as she is AMAZING!!

But here is my attempt first. :) ONLY COPICS! No white gel pen. :)

This is one of the hardest challenges I have taken on in a long time. So much pre-thought was required to try and achieve the look of water droplets.

The way I went about trying to create these was to draw the shape of my droplets before I began to colour. I felt this would help me to keep the highlight rather than completely relying on the ability of the blender pen.

I would then colour around the drops and then begin to shape the dewdrops with shadows and blending to a highlight. Finally after it had dried I would go in an lightly use the colorless blender to add some small highlights to the shadow side to help emphasise they were indeed 3D.

My inspiration for the shapes and colouring of dewdrops came from this video. However, he had the luxury of adding his drops AFTER he had finished his painting. hehehe

Now that the image is finished I feel the drops are a bit big in relation to the rose and leaves, but overall I am pretty happy with the result of the technique. Because there is soo much blending involved, I believe the paper used is very important. It needs to be able to absorb enough layers of ink before going tacky. I did have a few problems in some areas but my trick is to pick it up with my finger or a tissue by dabbing it.

I think I’ll try again when I have a chance as I did become better and get into a groove closer to the end. I would like to try with smaller drops and try a few sitting on top of the flower.

Anyhow, I thought it would be a bit of fun to share what goes on behind the scenes with us and how we are always striving to improve our skills using new ideas. :)

Big Squeezes

SPOT ON!! You rocked this challenge and I dub thee the winner!! You remembered to change the colors for those viable over the background which I forgot so mine look more like chocolate drops. ;D I see that you’ve got the shadows and reflection down better and something I’ll work on with the next one. I love the shapes too of the ones moving too. Gorgeous coloring – hands down the best challenge eva! :D
